Characteristics and safety of livestock-specific probiotics marketed in Korea
Lee Young-Ju

Abstract
To survey the characteristics of livestock-specific probiotics marketed in Korea, a total of 32 probiotics including 16 animal health products, were investigated for the period of availability, number of a kind of strain, a kind of major bacteria, total count of bacteria, and contamination of pathogens. The period of availability of probiotics varied greatly, from six months to five years, Most products had a period of availability of 12 months, however two products had a period of availability of 60 months, Number of a kind of strain included in probiotics ranged from 1 to 9, Twenty-five products contained one to three kinds of strain, however, one product was mixed with nine kinds. The major strains for probiotics were Lactobacillus and Bacillus. Declaration of content of strains varied greatly, from 103cfu/g to 10cfu/g, however, practical content generally showed a low count. Namely, only 12probiotic products showed an accurate count in declaration of content. Nineteen probiotic products showed coliforms of 3.6¡¿102~4.3¡¿105cfu/g and none of the probiotic products were contaminated with Salmonella, E.coli O157, S. aureus, or L. monocytogenes.
